Ingredients
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon soda
- 1 cup of shortening
- 1 cup of honey
- 1 cup of raisins or any dried fruit (I use dried apricots and cranberries)
- ½ cup of chopped dates
- 6 cups of flour (I use half all purpose flour and whole wheat flour)
- 3 eggs
Directions
Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs and honey cream together. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients and nuts and fruit and gradually stir into creamed mixture. Dough will be very stiff. Shape it with your hands into 1 inch bars as long as your lined or greased sheet pan. Place 2 inches apart (they will spread) Bake 18 to 20 minutes in put in a preheated 350 ℉ oven. While still warm brush with a glaze or orange juice and powdered sugar. I use ½ cup of powdered sugar and just enough orange juice to make it like a frosting that will spread. This makes about 7 dozen bars.
